Charles “Charlie” Lemon
Charles “Charlie” Lemon is a 31 year old retired Army Specialist and Tampa native. After being born and raised in central Florida, he enlisted into the United States Army in 2009 as a M1A2 Abrams tank crewman. Stationed with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment out of Fort Hood, Texas, he deployed to An Najaf, Iraq in August of 2010 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn. He had orders for a 12 month deployment, but on June 8th 2011 and just 6 weeks before he was scheduled to return home, his platoon came into contact with a roadside bomb. Charlie’s truck was hit by an EFP (Explosively Formed Penetrator) and, tragically, the truck was not the only victim of the explosion. Charlie lost both of his legs in the attack and, even more tragically, his best friend was killed instantly. He spent the following 18 months recovering in San Antonio, Texas where he learned to adjust to his new way of life. Now finished with rehab and medically retired from the Army, Charlie is back in Tampa living in a fu lly accessible house with his dog, Oscar.
